SELECTION FRAMEWORK

How Do You Choose the Right Energy Storage System?

A useful system definition connects energy, power, operating strategy, electrical integration and real installation conditions. Comparing kWh alone is not enough.

Energy Requirement

Define usable energy, backup duration and the expected daily cycle target.

Power Requirement

Identify continuous power, peak power and the required charge or discharge rate.

Operating Scenario

Clarify peak shaving, backup, renewable integration, load shifting or microgrid priorities.

Electrical Integration

Confirm grid voltage, PCS topology, AC or DC coupling strategy and site controls.

Installation Conditions

Review indoor or outdoor placement, temperature, footprint, access and environmental requirements.

SYSTEM RELATIONSHIPS

More Than a Battery Cabinet

A C&I ESS operates inside a site electrical and control architecture. Power conversion, battery management and site-level coordination have different responsibilities.

Typical commercial and industrial energy storage architecture Grid, photovoltaic and generator interfaces connect to AC distribution and site loads. A bidirectional PCS connects AC distribution to battery cabinets. The BMS manages the battery and an EMS coordinates site controls. Support layers include thermal management, protection, fire system interface and monitoring. FAQs About Commercial & Industrial Energy Storage Systems

Common questions about system sizing, applications, PCS integration, battery technology, installation and project configuration.

The required system size depends on your load profile, peak power demand, operating hours, backup duration and project goals. Bonnen can recommend a suitable kW and kWh configuration based on your actual application instead of selecting capacity only by battery size.

Our commercial and industrial energy storage systems can be used for peak shaving, load shifting, backup power, solar plus storage, EV charging support, renewable energy integration, microgrids and other commercial or industrial energy management applications.

Yes. Battery capacity, system voltage, PCS power, cabinet quantity, thermal management and communication interfaces can be configured according to your project requirements. Multiple cabinets can also be combined when larger energy capacity is required.

kW represents the power the system needs to deliver at a given time, while kWh represents how much energy needs to be stored. To determine both correctly, we normally review the maximum load, operating duration, charge and discharge strategy, and expected backup or peak-shaving time.

Yes. Our energy storage systems can be designed to communicate and operate with compatible PCS and inverter solutions. Please provide the PCS model, DC voltage range, communication protocol and system architecture so our engineering team can confirm compatibility.

Yes. A C&I battery energy storage system can be integrated with new or existing solar PV systems for solar self-consumption, peak shaving, load shifting or backup power. The final configuration depends on the PV capacity, inverter architecture, grid connection and site load profile.

Depending on the PCS and system design, the battery system can support grid-connected, off-grid or hybrid operating modes. For backup or microgrid projects, additional information about load priority, transfer requirements and generator or solar integration may be required.

LiFePO4 is commonly used for C&I energy storage because of its cycle life, thermal stability and suitability for frequent charge and discharge operation. Bonnen can also evaluate other battery technologies, including sodium-ion solutions, for specific project requirements.

Air-cooled systems use forced airflow for thermal management and are suitable for many standard applications. Liquid-cooled systems provide more precise temperature control and better temperature consistency, making them suitable for higher-energy-density systems, intensive cycling or demanding operating environments.

Yes. Outdoor energy storage systems can be designed with suitable enclosure protection, thermal management, fire protection and environmental controls. Installation location, ambient temperature, altitude, humidity and available space should be provided during project evaluation.

The system can include battery management, over-voltage, under-voltage, over-current, short-circuit, over-temperature, insulation monitoring, fire detection and other protection functions. Certification requirements vary by project and destination market, so please tell us the installation country and applicable standards during the quotation stage.

Please provide the application, required power, expected energy capacity, operating hours, load profile, solar or PCS information, grid conditions, installation location, available space, quantity and target schedule. Incomplete information is acceptable—our engineering team can help define the remaining system requirements.
