About Customization & The Process
1. My robot has a very specific size and shape requirement for the battery compartment. How much can you actually customize a battery pack?
A: Full customization is our specialty. We can design the pack to your exact dimensional specs—length, width, and height. We’ll also work with you on the voltage, capacity, cell chemistry, and even the communication protocol (like CAN bus) to ensure a perfect fit for your robot’s design and software.
2. What’s the process for developing a custom battery for my project? I need to plan my timeline.
A: It’s a straightforward, collaborative process. It usually goes like this:
-
Consultation: We discuss your project needs (power, size, environment, etc.).
-
Design & Proposal: Our engineers create a technical solution and a quote.
-
Prototyping: Once you approve the design, we build and test a prototype for you to validate.
-
Mass Production: After your final approval, we move to full production.
3. My system uses CAN bus for diagnostics. Can your batteries integrate with our existing communication protocol?
A: Absolutely. CAN bus integration is a common request for our AMR and robotics clients. Our smart BMS can be configured to communicate seamlessly with your robot’s control system, providing real-time data like State of Charge (SoC), voltage, current, and temperature. We can also support other protocols if needed.
Technical & Performance
4. Safety is a major concern for my jobsite robot. What specific safety features are built into your BMS?
A: We take safety very seriously. Our advanced Battery Management System (BMS) provides multi-level protection, including over-charge, over-discharge, over-current, and short-circuit protection. It also has active thermal management to monitor and control cell temperatures, which is critical for safe operation in demanding environments.
5. My robots operate on active construction sites. How do your batteries handle dust, water, and heavy vibration?
A: Our batteries are built for these conditions. We design them with rugged, durable enclosures and can build them to high IP ratings, like IP67, making them fully protected against dust and water immersion. The internal cell structure is also reinforced to withstand the constant shock and vibration common on jobsites.
6. Uptime is critical for us. How fast can your high-voltage batteries be charged?
A: We design our battery systems to support fast charging. The exact charge rate (C-rate) depends on the final cell chemistry and design, but our goal is to minimize your robot’s downtime. We’ll work with your team to match the battery’s charging capabilities to your project’s operational needs.
7. How do your batteries perform in extreme cold or hot environments? Our robots will be used outdoors year-round.
A: Our packs are designed with robust thermal management systems. For cold climates, we can integrate heating elements to pre-condition the battery for optimal performance. For hot environments, our cooling systems and cell spacing help dissipate heat effectively. We’ll specify an operational temperature range that meets your project’s deployment location.
8. You mention a long cycle life. What does that mean in terms of years or charge cycles, and how does it affect my project’s TCO?
A: Typically, our batteries are rated for 4,000+ charge cycles, depending on the chemistry and usage. For you, this means a longer operational life for your robot before needing a battery replacement. This significantly lowers your Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) by reducing replacement costs, maintenance labor, and downtime.
Logistics & Partnership
9. What is your typical lead time for a custom prototype and then for a full production run?
A: Lead times can vary based on project complexity. Generally, a prototype can take 4-7 weeks from design finalization. Once the prototype is approved, a mass production run typically takes an additional 4-7 weeks. We’ll provide a detailed project schedule once we understand your specific requirements.
10. What kind of certifications (like UL, CE, UN38.3) do your battery packs have?
A: Our products are manufactured to meet major international standards. We ensure all packs are UN38.3 certified for safe transport. We can also manage the process to get your custom battery pack certified for specific standards you require, such as UL or CE, to meet your market’s regulations.
11. Before I commit to a large order, can I get a prototype or a sample pack for testing with my robot?
A: Yes, absolutely. The prototype phase is a crucial part of our process. We expect and encourage you to perform rigorous testing with the prototype in your actual robot to ensure it meets every performance and safety requirement before moving to mass production.
12. Is there a Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) for custom battery projects?
A: Our MOQ depends on the complexity and specifics of the custom design. We are flexible and aim to support projects of various sizes, from emerging robotics startups to large-scale deployments. Let’s discuss your project’s volume, and we can provide a clear answer.
13. What kind of technical support do you offer during our integration phase?
A: We see ourselves as your power partner, not just a supplier. Our engineering team will be available to support your R&D team throughout the integration process. We can help with any questions about communication protocols, charging parameters, and mechanical fitting to ensure a smooth launch.
14. Why should I choose a custom solution from Bonnen Battery over a standard, off-the-shelf HV battery?
A: An off-the-shelf battery forces you to design your robot around the battery. A custom solution from us means we design the battery around your robot. This gives you optimized performance, the perfect form factor, reduced project risk, and a simplified supply chain with a single, expert partner.
15. My project requires a specific voltage not listed, like 800V. Are you limited to the 400V-700V range?
A: The 400V-700V range represents our most common requests for this category, but it’s not our limit. Our engineering team is experienced in designing higher-voltage systems. If your project requires 800V or another specific voltage, we have the capability to develop a custom solution for you.
